Philip Phung
Registered Psychologist

Phil is a Registered Psychologist and Clinical Psychology Registrar. He has completed a Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) and has experience in a variety of roles including in public health outpatient settings, community mental health, and occupational mental health consulting. His interests include areas such as adjustment disorders, trauma, sleep disorders, chronic pain, excessive self-criticism, and obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. Phil has also completed a Master of Rehabilitation Counselling and previously worked as a Rehabilitation Counsellor, supporting people to return to work after workplace or traffic accidents through tailored return-to-work arrangements, vocational counselling, and detailed vocational assessments.

Phil aims to create a therapeutic environment that is understanding, non-judgemental, and trauma-informed, and enjoys supporting people to pursue lives filled with richness, meaning, and continual growth. His practice is informed by an integrative Process-Based Therapy (PBT) approach, meaning that therapy is tailored to the specifics of you as a person, your current situation, the influences of your past, and your desired future.

During the initial stages of therapy with Phil, you can expect to collaborate on a visual ‘map’ to identify the biopsychosocial systems unique to you, that contribute to and perpetuate current challenges you may be facing. Subsequent sessions will usually involve working together on a personalised action plan designed to disrupt these systems and allow for positive change. As a result, Phil tends to use a blend of approaches and techniques from different therapies, including but not limited to: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT). Phil is completing training in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and may also be able to offer this type of therapy to select clients experiencing trauma symptoms.

Phil sees clients aged 17 years and above.
